Amid rapid growth in queries and in newly-announced projects, Big Small Town Books is looking to add several copyeditors to its publishing team.
Copyeditors ensure that proper, industry-standard style is adhered to throughout a manuscript, and that elements maintain consistency in style and prose throughout that manuscript. Those copyeditors may also serve as proofreaders, who take a final look at a manuscript after it has been converted to book layout and ensure there are no remaining errors in spelling, grammar, and style.
A working desktop or laptop computer with internet access
A basic, working knowledge of Google Drive
Expert command of the English language—especially sentence and paragraph structure, grammar and spelling
Strong editing skills
Strong, self-starting work ethic, with ability to read a particular manuscript multiple times, quickly and efficiently while making edits
Attention to detail
Knowledge of Chicago Style rules is helpful but not required, however candidates should possess the handbook or have it bookmarked online for reference
Some formal/college training in English is helpful, but not required
The best candidates are:
People with an excellent sense of language and mechanics, with eye for detail
Excellent, patient communicators and “people people,” who can work easily with and among many personality types
Great multitaskers and schedulers, with the ability to work on multiple projects at once, and meet deadlines set by team leads
Great at online etiquette, for team communication using our private Discord server
We offer a flat, up-front rate of $2.75 per 1,000 words, payable upon project completion, plus a five percent (5%) royalty on all sales of the project until payout on that project reaches ten times (10x) the initial flat rate paid. Royalty payments are made quarterly in March, June, September, and December, and cover the previous quarter.
For example, if your client’s book is 82,345 words and earns $4 per copy sold, and the book sells 250 copies ($1,000) in the first quarter, you would earn $226.45 up-front, and $100 for that book in that quarter, which would be paid to you in June (end of the second quarter). You would continue to earn a 5% royalty on that book's sales until your payout maxes out at $2,264.50 (ten times your initial flat rate). This roughly equals the average rate of $0.03 per word for copyeditors/proofreaders.
Copyeditors work from home and set their own schedules, depending on how many projects they’re tackling simultaneously, and depending on deadlines.
Editorial interns may be expected to attend occasional team meetings with their team leads and fellow team members for project updates, changes to deadlines, etc.
The copyeditor position is perfect for college English majors or candidates looking for editorial experience with a fun, growing company that seeks to put the next crop of great books in the hands of our readers.
